George Venn- April 26, 2018 at 7:30 pm, The Cup at Montana Western

George Venn is a northwest literary historian, critic, editor, and poet. Venn graduated from The College of Idaho and completed his MFA at the University of Montana; he then became Writer-in-Residence at Eastern Oregon University. For thirty years, he wrote and taught writing, literature, and ESL. Since the 1970s, he has regularly published poetry and prose that discover, celebrate, and illuminate the rural northwest experience.

Revered in Oregon, his work has been included in the national Poetry in Motion program, carved in stone at the New Oregon Zoo, and featured in the Ron Finne film “Tamanawis Illahee.” Three different composers have set his lyrics to music for concert performances across the Pacific Northwest.

In 1988, his collection, “Marking the Magic Circle,” won an Oregon Book Award and a silver medal from Literary Arts; in 2005, the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission and the Oregon State Library selected it as one of the 100 best Oregon books in two centuries.

Venn’s latest is “Lichen Songs: New and Selected Poems.” It features a variety of poems curated from his immense catalogue along with several new unpublished pieces.
