UMW to Hold Student Orientation Activities and Convocation

The University of Montana Western’s Office of Residence Life announced the university has scheduled its New Student Orientation for Thursday, Aug. 23 - Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018.

Convocation 2018

Convocation is an exciting time for new and returning students, the campus community and friends and family to gather and celebrate the beginning of the academic year.

The activities begin at 8 a.m. on Opening Day with the Montana Western Moving Company event. The community is invited to help new students and their families move into the residence halls on the Montana Western campus.

Residence Life Director Michael Piazzola said this year’s program will include Convocation (the official start of the school year ceremony), an inspirational keynote address by speaker Darryl Bellamy Jr., and a hike to the hillside “M”.

“Orientation is mandatory for all first-year and transfer students and it’s also fun and informative.  It’s a great way for the community to show new students just how welcoming Dillon and the Montana Western family truly is,” Piazzola said.

Convocation keynote speaker Darryl Bellamy Jr. is a motivational speaker who encourages character development and personal growth while instilling the knowledge and techniques necessary to identify and overcome fear. Parents, friends and family are cordially invited to attend Convocation with their student on Friday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. in the Keltz Arena.

Additional events include sessions for Native American, Veteran and TRIO students, a football scrimmage with tailgate dinner and a dance.
