UMW Announces Fall Semester to Begin as Scheduled on August 24

The University of Montana Western plans to welcome students to campus for Fall Semester 2020 on the originally published date of August 24. The university is scheduled to offer the usual four blocks each semester, with students taking one face-to-face, experiential learning course at a time.

“We worked hard to design a calendar that would not require our students to start early,” said Chancellor Beth Weatherby. “Our students were part of the process. They stressed how important it is to them to be able to work as long as possible, especially with the financial hardships many have faced due to this new coronavirus.”

In accordance with Montana University System planning, outlined in a May 14 memo from Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian, all campuses have been asked to revise their academic calendars so that students are not expected to return to campus after Thanksgiving in order to help reduce the risk of infection by the COVID-19 virus related to holiday travel. According to public health officials, this plan will help reduce virus transmission during the typical late fall and early winter influenza season.

University officials, faculty, and staff are working with public health officials to develop plans to mitigate risk as on-campus classes and activities resume this fall.
